1981年　早稲田大学理工学部機械工学科卒業．
1983年　同大学大学院博士前期課程修了．
1986年　同大学大学院博士後期課程単位修得退学．同年早稲田大学理工学部助手．
1989年　つくば万博(1985年)日本政府テーマ間で展示実演された鍵盤楽器演奏ロボットに関する研究により工学博士．バイオメカニズムの視点から見直した人間機械系を人間共存ロボット，人間ロボットコミュニケーション，知的生産システムなどに適用することに興味がある．
1991年　ピアノ演奏ロボットWABOT-2mkIIにより日本ロボット学会技術賞受賞．
2000年　日本機械学会論文賞受賞．
2001年　日本機械学会ロボティクスメカトロニクス部門学術業績賞．
2006年　日本機械学会フェロー．
2007年　IEEEフェロー．

Shigeki Sugano received the B.S., M.S., and Dr. of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering in 1981, 1983, and 1989, respectively, from Waseda University.
From 1987 to 1991, he was a Research Associate in Waseda University. Since 1991, he has been a Faculty Member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Waseda University, where he is currently a Professor. From 1993 to 1994, he was a Visiting Scholar in the Mechanical Engineering Department, Stanford University. Since 2001, he has been a Director of the Waseda WABOT-HOUSE laboratory. He is a member of the Humanoid Robotics Institute of Waseda University. Since 2001, He has been the President of Japan Association for Automation Advancement.
His research interests include human-symbiotic anthropomorphic robot design, dexterous and safety manipulator, and human-robot communication. He received the Technical Innovation Award from the Robotics Society Japan for the development of Waseda Piano-Playing Robot: WABOT-2 in 1991. He received the JSME Medal for Outstanding Paper from the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2000. He received JSME Fellow Award in 2006. He received IEEE Fellow Award in 2007. He received RSJ Fellow Award in 2008.

菅野研究室のテーマは大きく３つの柱からなる．

（１）人間共存ロボットの開発研究（TWENDY-ONEプロジェクト）
（２）人間支援のための環境構造化に関する研究（WABOT-HOUSEプロジェクト）
（３）機械における心の発生に関する研究（WAMOEBAプロジェクト）

TWENDY-ONEは，超高齢社会での生活・就労支援に必要となる安全・安心，巧みさと，人間の介助に必要となる高出力とを両立させ，親和性のある形状・材質を備えた人間共存ロボットであり，人間と作業空間を共有して作業ができるようにするために，受動柔軟性，全身での触覚，高巧緻性４指ハンドなど，多くの特徴を備えている．
WABOT-HOUSEは，建築系，通信系そしてロボット系の分野が連携を行い，RT(Robot Technology)がサービスを行う近未来の居住モデルを提案することを目指した研究である．例えば，人間・ロボット共生ルームにおいて空間測位情報に焦点を当てた環境構造化をすすめ，ロボットが人間に対して必要なサービスを行うためのインフラ・システムを設計している．
WAMOEBAは，高機能化してゆくロボットが究極的に人間と同じような感情を持ち得る可能性について探求するために開発しているロボットである．WAMOEBAでは，人間の感情情緒を司っている自律系と同等の構造を機械内部に構築しその働きをシミュレートして機械の動きを変化させることで，結果としてそれが本質の感情そして知能であるとの立場で研究を進めている．

There are three themes in Sugano Laboratory.

TWENDY-ONE is a sophisticated human-symbiotic-robot which equips safe, dependable and dexterous functions. Her special feature is the combination function of the dexterity with passivity and the high-power output. When she manipulates an object with various shape, it is easy for her to adapt to the object by passivity to absorb external force generated by the positioning deviation. In the same way, she can adapt to human motion and hold a human.
In the WABOT-HOUSE project, not only robotics engineers, architects or IT researchers but also fine artists take part and try to design an optimal shape from robotic and architectural points of view. For example, in the first floor of the 1st building of the Block B, a new design of dining room/kitchen with RFID tags and indoor GPS are introduced as a research platform of new technologies of structured environment for human-robot symbiosis.
WAMOEBA project aims to clarify the characteristics and the design method of "mind" by focusing on "emotional interaction" which has the effectiveness to realize coordination between human and robots. This research adopts the methodology of constructing "Emotion model" of robots by referring to the autonomy of living creatures. The autonomy of a living creature is the "adjustment" to the environment caused by the instinct of "self-preservation". When the output of the function of "self-preservation" was observed, "Emotion" can be regarded as a kind of expression.
